PV Sindhu Rio Olympics 2016 Winner – Inspiring Story
P.V Sindhu is born to Volleyball players – P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya in Hyderabad. Sindhu’s father Ramana has represented India in Volleyball and is also an Arjuna Award winner for his sport. Pullela Gopichand, the 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion inspired Sindhu to take up Badminton. She started her training in Badminton at a tender age of 8. The hardworking Sindhu used to travel more than 50 kilometers every day to reach her training centre in Hyderabad. In 2013 Sindhu was awarded Arjuna Award by Government of India, followed by which in 2015, Sindhu received India’s fourth highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. In 2016, she became the first Indian female to reach the Olympic Badminton final.
Achievements
In the under-10 years category, Sindhu won The 5th Servo All India ranking championship in the doubles category and the singles title at the Ambuja Cement All India ranking. Later on, in the under-13 years category Sindhu won the singles title at the Sub-juniors in Pondicherry, doubles titles at the Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament, IOC All India Ranking, Sub-Junior Nationals and the All India Ranking in Pune.She also won the under-14 team gold medal at the 51st National School Games in India.
2009 – Sindhu was a bronze medalist at the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships held in Colombo.
2010 – Sindhu won the silver medal in the singles category at the Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge.
Sindhu was a team member of the India’s national team at the 2010 Uber Cup.
July 2012 – She won Asia Youth Under 19 Championship.
September 2012 – Sindhu broke into the Top 20 in the Badminton World Federation rankings.
December 2012 – Sindhu finished runner-up in the Syed Modi India Grand Prix Gold event held in Lucknow.
2013 – Sindhu won Malaysian open title 2013, winning her maiden Grand Prix Gold title.
August 2013 – Sindhu became India’s first medalist in women’s singles at the World Championships.
December 2013 – Sindhu won Macau Open Grand Prix Gold title by defeating Canada’s Michelle Li
2014 – PV Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian to win two back-to-back medals in the World Badminton Championships.
2015 – P. V. Sindhu won her third successive women’s singles title at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold.
January 2016 – Sindhu won the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold women’s singles title. In the same year’s Premier Badminton league, she was the captain of Chennai Smashers team.
18 August 2016 Sindhu beat Japanese badminton player Nozomi Okuhara in Rio Olympics 2016 to enter into the finals of Badminton singles.
And finally, Sindhu won the prestigious gold medal at the Rio Olympics 2016, after beating the Spain champion Carolina Marin in the finals.
