You’ve probably seen a lot of people, especially celebrities, if you follow that scene, Who’ve lost a ton of weight using a liquid diet plan, and you’re probably curious as to how they work, and most importantly, will it work for you.
First. Lets take a quick look at what a liquid diet plan is.
Liquid diet weight loss plans are usually very low calorie meal plans. The specifics vary from plan to plan, but in general, requires you to either replace one or two meals a day with all liquid meals, OR go on a full liquid diet by replacing all meals.
They can be bought over the counter in some health food stores, or in some cases, might be prescribed to you by your doctor. Or, you might even find some online by hopping on Google.
Now, lets take a look at the Pros and Cons of a liquid diet plan.
First, the pros of a liquid diet plan
Since they are very low in calories, you will lose weight fast. The meals are generally easy to make since you usually only need some basic ingredients, supplements and a blender. So they are very simple and easy to get started.
Next, The biggest problems with liquid diet weight loss plans:
The weight loss is short lived. Since they are very low in calories, very soon, your body goes into starvation mode to try to conserve energy. This will stop the weight loss.
This will also start to give you the horrible side effects of a very low calorie diet. You will start to feel:
Cranky and irritable
Tired and lethargic
Difficult to concentrate and be very very forgetful
So, the million dollar question, Should you go for a liquid diet plan?
I used to be completely against liquid diet plans because of their negative effects, but now I’ve come to learn that, in the right place and for the right people they can be useful.
I’ve seen them used most effectively in two ways, and if you do decide to go on a liquid diet plan, I suggest you try one of these.
1. They are most effective when used at the beginning of a more comprehensive weight loss program, to jump start the results. Though some doctors have been known to prescribe them for up to 12 weeks, I would only recommend an all liquid diet for the first 3 to 7 days before switching to a more moderate plan to avoid going into starvation mode. This way, you will get an initial boost in weight loss without the side effects and the crashing.
Now, please check with your doctor before you go on any diet or weight loss program, ESPECIALLY a very low calorie one because of its side effects.
2. The second way is to use a liquid diet meal to replace the more hard to manage meals. For example, if you find that you are eating unhealthy meals for lunch, or that you tend to skip breakfast because you don’t have time, that could be the perfect place for a liquid diet meal.
For me, breakfast was an issue. Skipping breakfast is not only unhealthy, it slows down your metabolism, and weight loss. So now I have a green shake every morning which gives me all my essential nutrients and proteins and takes next to no time to prepare.
