Common Cold

Common cold is a viral infection that affects the upper respiratory tract. There are over 250 different viruses that can cause common cold. When one of these viruses enters into the nose via surrounding air, it gets stuck to the lining of the nose and the throat, causing infection.

Symptoms to look for:

• Runny nose
• Sore throat
• Headaches, cough
• Watery eyes
• Sneezing
• Nasal congestion

Food groups to consume in common cold:

1. Warm liquids: They soothe the throat, dilutes mucus and
relieves from congestion

Foods to consume: Warm soups, broths, teas and hot milk

2. Vitamin C: Boosts immunity levels and helps body fight
infection

Foods to consume: Berries, oranges, lemons, bell peppers, papaya, cauliflower, broccoli, kiwi and guava

3. Foods rich in beta carotene: Their antioxidant properties help
to fight against infections

Foods to consume: Tomatoes, melons, squash, grapefruit, green leafy vegetables, mangoes, beetroot and carrots

4. Vitamin B: Gives energy to body

Foods to consume: Oats, brown rice, millets and quinoa

Recipes based on the above food groups:

Recipe 1: Warm drink

1. Add 200 ml milk in a vessel
2. Heat this for about 5 min
3. Now add 4-5 chopped dates in this
4. Also add a pinch of cardamom powder
5. Now in order to make sure that the dates are blended well
with the milk we are going to use a hand blender
6. Blend this well
7. Your drink is ready
8. Pour it in a glass
9. Make sure to serve this hot

This date milk makes for a very healthy morning drink

Recipe 2: Soupy rice

1. Add 2 tsp oil in a vessel
2.Chop and add 1 clove of garlic in it
3. Saute it till it turns light brown
4. Now add 2 tbsp chopped carrots in it
5. Also add 2 tbsp chopped French beans
6. Saute this mixture for about 10 minutes
7. Now, pour 2 ½ cups of water in it
8. Heat this mixture for about 10 min till the water comes to boil.
Keep stirring
9. Once the veggies have softened up, add some herbs to the
mixture
10. Add a pinch dried of sage, some rosemary and finally
some parsley
11. Mix this well
12. Now, add ½ tsp soy sauce
13. Add salt and pepper to taste
14. Finally add ½ cup of cooked rice in it
15. Stir this slowly for about 2 min, till all the flavors come
together
16. Your dish is ready, serve it hot

• Avoid red meat, cheese, ice creams
