Cholera

Cholera is a bacterial infection in the small intestine. The bacteria enters into the body through contaminated foods or water and grows in the small intestine.

Symptoms to look for:

• Vomiting
• Excessive thirst
• Diarrhoea
• Muscle cramps

Causes:

• Contaminated foods or water and
• Bacterial growth in the small intestine

Food groups to consume in cholera:

1. Liquids: Keeps away dehydration

Foods to consume: Coconut water, cold soups, barley water and lemon juice

2. Easy-to-digest low fiber: Act as binding agents & firm up the
loose, watery stool that slows down the bowel movement &
gives relief from diarrhea

Foods to consume: Porridge, rice, oats, corn meal, mashed potatoes, boiled carrots and stewed apples and soft fruits like mangoes, papaya, pears and peaches

3. Probiotics: Strengthens immunity

Foods to consume: Miso and yogurt

Recipes based on the above food groups:

Recipe 1: Wheat porridge

1. Put 1 cup wheat porridge (daliya) in a vessel
2. Add 3 cups water and some salt in it
3. Also add 2 tbsp raisins and a pinch of cinnamon powder
4. Bring to a boil, stir well and lower the heat

Cook this covered for about 15 -12 minutes, stirring from time to time.

5. Once the porridge is cooked, grate an apple and add in the
mixture
6. Also add 1 cup papaya pieces in it and stir well
7. Now add 1 tsp sugar in it
8. Mix this well
9. Finally, cover the vessel and remove from the heat
10. Let it rest for 5 min

Recipe 2: Papaya smoothie

1. Put 5-6 big pieces of papaya in a blender
2. Add 1/2 cup curd yogurt
3. Now Also add some water and a pinch of cardamom powder.
4. Blend this mixture till it is smooth
5. Pour this in a glass and refrigerate
6. Serve chilled
